“Mercato dell’arte” begins with an exploration and documentation of existing calligraphic expressions in the city of Bari, as part of the “On the street” project promoted by Spazio13. On the street is an urban art initiative that sheds light on the meaning of inhabiting places in a collective and community-oriented way. In November 2023, it brought various educational activities and artistic actions to the Libertà neighborhood of Bari.
Guided by Mario Nardulli and Michele Santella, the students of class III A of the De Nittis and Pascali Art High School engaged in an unpredictable dialogue with local residents and shopkeepers.
Over the course of 20 hours of intensive workshops, the students immersed themselves in the nuances of sign painting. Divided into six teams, they connected with the stalls of the former Tobacco Factory in Bari and, in close collaboration with local vendors, created meaningful signs for each stall, mediating with their requests.
To this exercise—bridging art and commercial identities—a live screen-printing performance was also added during the closing event of “On the street”, offering all market vendors price tags bearing the name “Mercato dell’arte.”
